Was there ever an avalanche that threatened Galtür before that? Or an avalanche that buried parts of Galtür? Once, in 1967, if I remember correctly an avalanche came down on Galtür. But it was further out. It was close to the village square. The Hotel Fluchthorn and a workshop beside it were damaged then. At the time there was no avalanche protection yet. Afterwards walls were built around that part. Where Winkl was buried by the avalanche in 1999 – no local can remember there ever being an avalanche there. One more example I would like to mention: My house is where the avalanche ended, on the other side of the valley. About 150 metres in front of my house there used to be an old farm house. That was there for over 300 years. In 1999 it was destroyed. That proves that it really was a 'once in a century' event. That is – it happened to us of all people.
